Oxfordshire-based shipping and marine fuels publishing, events and training firm, Petrospot Limited, has appointed the experienced and highly-respected bunker journalist Gabian Chew as its Senior Correspondent and Representative (Asia), effective 4 May.

Based in his native Singapore, Gabian is a trained journalist with six years of specialist editorial and analytical experience in marine fuels, having worked for Bunkerworld (now Platts Bunkerworld).

Gabian comes with established links within the bunker and shipping sectors, particularly in Singapore and Hong Kong, and is well acquainted with local government departments, industry associations and commercial organisations.

Gabian will represent Petrospot within the Asia-Pacific region and undertake a range of responsibilities, including reporting on Asian markets and industry developments for Petrospot's leading magazine Bunkerspot and its online news service, www.bunkerspot.com.

He will also be involved in promoting Petrospot's other key products and services, which include a growing library of books on bunkering, maritime law and marine surveying, as well as the company's highly-respected training programmes, including the Oxford Bunker Course, and conferences, including the internationally acclaimed London International Shipping Week, European Shipping Week, Maritime Week Americas and ARACON.

"Petrospot is a well-established organisation that has been active in the shipping and bunkering markets since 2003," says Chew, "although its founder has been involved in this industry for over 36 years.

"Petrospot is already very well known, particularly in Europe, Africa and the Americas, through its magazine, books, training and conferences," he says. "My aim is to heighten the company's presence in Asia and to be Petrospot's 'man on the ground' to ensure that the company is fully represented here in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia."

"We are delighted to welcome Gabian on board," says Lesley Bankes-Hughes, Director of Publishing at Petrospot and Editor of Bunkerspot. "He not only has a deep knowledge of the Asian industry and the players within it, but also has a particularly keen sense of what makes a good 'story' while maintaining an admirably strong editorial ethic.

"We are moving into an exciting new phase in the development of the Bunkerspot brand, and Gabian will play a key role in seeing through the changes," she adds.

Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes, Founder and Managing Director of Petrospot, commented: "We have been active in Asia for many years – indeed, I personally have attended every single SIBCON since 1988 – but with so much now happening in Asia, and particularly in Singapore, it is vital that the company has full-time representation here.

"Gabian will be our eyes and ears in Singapore and will be well placed to spearhead our further advance into Asia in the months to come. With Petrospot contracted to run next year's IBIA Annual Convention in Singapore and to further develop its Asian training courses, the timing could not be better."
