RECOVERY POSITION: THE WAY BACK FOR SHIPPING AND BUNKER MARKETS
Chaos in world shipping and bunker markets, following hot on the heels of the economic devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, will ensure that debate at this year’s Maritime Week Americas in Panama will be even more lively than usual.
Disrupted global supply chains, runaway oil prices and container freight rates, major port congestion and international sanctions pose a unique set of problems that will be analysed and discussed in depth. But despite the huge logistics and personnel challenges, the strategically important shipping and bunkering sectors have had no option but to work throughout this difficult period. Nowhere is this more evident than in Panama.
For the first time ever, the Panama Canal broke the 500 million tonnage barrier last year. Sales figures for 2021 suggest that Panama’s bunker sales are on the path to recovery from the mid-2020 slump, when the Covid -19 disruption was having its biggest impact on shipping activity and bunker demand. Sales volumes could also see a fillip from the start of supply operations at the Cristobal outer anchorage which began in March 2021. Furthermore, global economic and shipping activity is now increasing, which should support the bunker market generally.
MWA22 promises a high-powered Flagship Conference, a visit to the Panama Canal and an onboard tour of a Monjasa bunker tanker - in addition to the most spectacular networking in the bunker industry. MWA22 will certainly deliver!
