Maritime Week Las Palmas 2020

Supplying Ships in the Atlantic

The Port of Las Palmas and its key Government and Industry stakeholders have joined forces with Petrospot to create the inaugural Maritime Week Las Palmas – Supplying Ships in the Atlantic, a major new biennial event designed to showcase and promote this dynamic and fast-developing logistics hub and the wide range of maritime services provided by Las Palmas to ships sailing to and from Africa, Europe and the Americas.

Strategically located off the West Coast of Africa, Las Palmas is the most important port facility and bunkering hub in the Mid-Atlantic but it is also a key centre for ship supplies of all description and a thriving ship repair centre.

Las Palmas is highly regarded for its size, infrastructure and the variety and quality of the services on offer, and as a leading logistics hub it has over 30 maritime lines connected to over 180 ports around the world.

In 2018, there were 10,050 ship stopovers in Las Palmas, with more than 23.3 million tonnes of goods traffic processed, 2.3 million tonnes of bunker fuel delivered, 674,000 cruise passengers and over one million twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) containers handled.

The Port Authority of Las Palmas is a public institution. It is part of the Puertos del Estado - State Ports (Ministry of Development), which manages five ports in the Las Palmas province: Las Palmas, Salinetas and Arinaga on the island of Gran Canaria; Los Mármoles in Arrecife on Lanzarote, and Puerto del Rosario on Fuerteventura.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent and the United Nations World Food Program have storage warehouses in the port, from where they distribute humanitarian aid to the African countries that need it. The location was chosen for its strategic position, availability of excellent services, dense network of sea and air connections and favourable Customs regulations. The Port of Las Palmas, and the Canary Islands as a whole, has a special tax status within the European Union.

Through a high-level conference, training courses, a maritime exhibition, a specialist business-to-business meeting programme, technical site visits and some stunning networking activities, Maritime Week Las Palmas will not only show what this remarkable port has to offer but will also ensure that it is forever pinned firmly onto the global shipping map.

A series of Government and Industry events designed to:

  • Address the major issues in the international shipping and maritime industries
  • Create a global forum for networking and developing important new trading relationships
  • Examine global regulation, including IMO 2020
  • Showcase Las Palmas as the Mid-Atlantic’s premier bunkering hub and key source of fuel supply to West Africa
  • Demonstrate Las Palmas’ expertise in offshore, ship repair and related heavy industries
  • Investigate the logistical services the Port offers
  • Highlight the top-level automation and digitalisation and technical developments at the Port
  • Provide a unique hands-on opportunity to experience the maritime infrastructure of Las Palmas

Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes, Managing Director of UK-based Petrospot commented:

‘Las Palmas is already well-known as a bunkering centre for ships sailing north from Africa and East from the Americas, and vice-versa, but as a ship supply centre it offers so much more than is generally known. This major new event will highlight the ship building and repair facilities and three dry docks in Las Palmas. It will look at the hugely important West African offshore oil and gas industry and its tank farms which are an important source of oil supply for several West African states. It will showcase Las Palmas’ activities in the container transhipment sector, a well as in the cruise and ferry and offshore fishing sectors. The wide range of first class maritime-related activities carried out in Las Palmas, from crew change to the supply of provisions, will be amply demonstrated during Maritime Week Las Palmas.’

Director of the Fundación Puertos de Las Palmas, Sergio Galván Montesdeoca, added:

‘This fantastic new event offers a wonderful opportunity for local Las Palmas organisations to engage with the international maritime community, offering them the perfect platform to demonstrate the very best of what Las Palmas has to offer. The business-to-business session meeting platform will be especially useful for companies to meet each other during the event. We are delighted that Petrospot is leading this project and, with the dedication and contribution from all the major stakeholders in the port, Government and Industry alike, we are sure that Maritime Week Las Palmas will be at least as great as the many other international events Petrospot organises.’
