An Introduction to Shipping • LISW17

This one-day course explains the basics of ships and the business of shipping and is suitable for new entrants to the maritime sector. It aims to educate and inform newcomers to shipping and those whose jobs require a basic grasp of how the industry works.

The course covers the essential elements of vessels, cargo and shipping. Subjects include:

  • trade routes
  • the fundamentals of shipping and ship types
  • the port environment
  • navigation, onboard ship organisation and manning
  • chartering, broking, classification and insurance
  • international maritime conventions
  • finance
  • bunkering
  • essential information on key technical, operational, legal and commercial issues.

About the lecturer

Draffin Nigel 100px
Written and delivered by Nigel Draffin, who has been involved in shipping for almost 50 years, spending 13 years at sea with Shell Tankers before coming ashore to work first in their new building department at Shell International Marine, and then in Shell’s R&D unit specialising in control systems, fuel combustion and safety systems. In 1986 he joined Shell’s commercial department becoming Head of Operational Economics responsible for fuel purchasing for the entire Shell fleet, the operation of risk management policy and the speed/performance of the fleet. In 1996 he retired from Shell and joined the bunker department of E.A. Gibson Shipbrokers which in 2006 merged with US-based broking house LQM Petroleum Services, where he was Senior Broker and Technical Manager until his retirement in July 2015.
