A Practical Introduction to Biofuels • Netherlands

This 1-day practical Biofuels course provides an overview of the possible application and use of biofuels in the marine distillate and residual fuel oils market, such as described in the new ISO 8217:2024 standard for distillate and residual fuel oils. The course includes a theory session in the morning, followed by hands-on practical laboratory work in the afternoon.

This in-person intensive course introduces existing and future regulation impacting marine fuel oils and from this framework identifies which and how the various type of biofuels may be introduced into marine distillate and residual fuel oils.

The various types of biofuels currently available will be examined in detail, including discussions on feedstocks, production, biofuel vs. marine fuel oil specifications, blending aspects and the final marine fuel oil application.

  • Introduction to regulation and (national) legislation
  • Feedstocks: conventional and advanced feedstocks
  • Production: biofuel processes (e.g. esterification, hydrotreatment, F-T)
  • Types of biofuels: FAME, HVO, etc.
  • Biofuel quality and blending aspects
  • Operational and storage issues

In the afternoon practical/laboratory session the participants will work in small groups in the laboratory with different marine and biofuels, and will perform:

  • A marine residual fuel oil/biofuel blend calculation
  • Blending a marine residual fuel oil/biofuel in accordance with ISO 8217:2024
  • Testing of marine residual fuel oil/biofuel blend (e.g. stability & compatibility).
