Dr Karl Alvarez
Medical Director & ‘Port Doctor’, Maritime Medical Services (MMS)
Dr Alvarez first qualified as a physiotherapist at The University of Nottingham in 2005, after which he established his own physiotherapy clinic and developed his practice by working with elite athletes.
He went on to study Medicine at the University of Southampton and followed this with postgraduate training. He is a Member of both the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of General Practitioners and has a Diploma in Clinical Dermatology with Distinction from Queen Mary University in London.
Dr Alvarez returned home to Gibraltar in 2019. He has a keen interest in Maritime Medicine and Occupational Health and is passionately involved with the maritime health sector of Gibraltar and is one of Gibraltar’s Port Health Officers. He is the Medical Director of both Maritime Medical Services Limited and of Occupational Health Services Gibraltar. -
Lewis Baglietto QC
Team Leader, Partner, Hassans
Lewis is ranked globally as a Tier 1 shipping lawyer by renowned major international legal directories. He has most recently been involved in high profile cases including a collision between two luxury yachts off the south of France and an oil pollution incident in Gibraltar earlier this year.
Lewis is regularly called upon to give expert evidence on Gibraltar law in maritime and commercial cases before foreign courts and tribunals.
He was also actively involved in one of the most high-profile maritime cases in Gibraltar in recent times; the seizure of the tanker Grace 1, which was boarded by Royal Marines and then detained in Gibraltar on suspicion of delivering oil to Syria, in violation of EU sanctions. The case put Gibraltar and its maritime enforcement procedures squarely in the public eye internationally. -
Llewellyn Bankes-Hughes

Llewellyn has worked in bunkering, oil and shipping since 1980, as journalist and broker, in London and New York, working for Argus, Petroleum Intelligence Weekly, Eperon Petroleum, Albion Oil and Energy Information. He joined MRC in Oxford to launch BunkerNews, before establishing Petrospot in 2003 to publish Bunkerspot magazine, news and pricing services, and highly-respected bunker and shipping books.
He has created and run globally-recognised events in 25 countries around the world, including Maritime Week Americas, ARACON, London International Shipping Week and European Shipping Week, and runs internationally-renowned training programmes, including the Oxford Bunker Course and BunkerExperience.

John Bassadone
CEO, Peninsula
John A. Bassadone is the Founder and CEO of Peninsula and has been involved in the Gibunco Group businesses for all of his professional life. Building on the existing maritime success of Gibunco in Gibraltar, John established Peninsula in 1996, and since then it has enjoyed substantial growth and success.
John maintains oversight over Peninsula’s global operations, with particular focus on commercial aspects, investment decisions and finance and liquidity. He also retains important external networks with key suppliers and customers and has become a well-known and highly regarded industry figure. -
Steve Bee
Group Commercial & Business Development Director, VPS
Steve is responsible for the development and implementation of global commercial strategy for VPS.
Graduating from Northumbria University with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry, Steve worked as an R&D Chemist for BNFL, ICI and Sanofi-Aventis, before joining Anachem Ltd in a commercial role within laboratory instrumentation in 1997. Progressing his international commercial career, Steve moved from technical sales to be Sales & Marketing Manager, before becoming the General Manager for a1-Envirotech, gaining formal business management qualifications and awards along the way.
Steve joined Lintec Testing Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Intertek, as Operations & Key Accounts Manager in 2007, before becoming General Manager of Lintec in 2011, then Director of Intertek ShipCare in June 2012, a role held until he joined VPS. -
Mads Bjørnebye
Manager, Bunker Services, Teekay Tankers
Mads started his career in the oil & gas industry with ExxonMobil in 2004, heading the trucking fuel logistics team for Norway and Finland.
Since 2009, he has been working in the bunker industry, having held various positions with Wilhelmsen Premier Marine Fuels, Cockett Marine Oil and KPI Bridge Oil. Since 2018, he has headed up the bunker procurement team at Teekay in London. -
Julian Clark

Julian Clark is the Global Senior Partner at Ince, and is responsible for the various sectors and vast client base across the international legal and consultancy firm. With over 30 years of experience in mediation, arbitration and litigation, Julian is an internationally recognised leader in shipping and international trade, with great influence and standing in the industry.

Commodore Steve Dainton CBE
Commander British Forces, Gibraltar
Commodore Dainton joined the Royal Navy in 1987. His early career included Command of HMS Quorn. After qualifying as a Principal Warfare Officer, he obtained an MA in Defence Studies from JSCSC Shrivenham. After promotion to Commander in 2004, he became Commanding Officer of HMS St Albans before joining the Directorate of Operational Capability in the Ministry of Defence. In 2009, he completed an operational tour as Staff Operations Officer to the UK Maritime Component Commander in Bahrain prior to joining the UK Maritime Battle Staff, specifically employed in the Operational HQ in the EU Counter Piracy mission.
Promoted to Captain in 2010, he took Command of HMS Cumberland, received a CBE, and returned to the Ministry of Defence in 2011. In 2013, he took command of HMS Collingwood, the Navy’s largest training establishment. He was promoted to Commodore in 2015 and took over as UK Maritime Component Commander in June 2017. In 2019, he returned to the UK to attend the Royal College of Defence Studies, prior to becoming Commander British Forces, Gibraltar in July 2020. -
The Honourable Vijay Daryanani MP
Minister for Business, Tourism, and the Port
Minister Daryanani joined the Executive Committee of the Liberal Party in 1995 and was the first member of the Indian Community to stand for election in 2000. He narrowly missed out on a seat in parliament by 60 votes. He has since represented the Liberal Party in conferences abroad, especially through Liberal International.
With a professional background in business, Minister Daryanani has run his family business successfully for over twenty-five years and was a founding member of the Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses in 1995.
The Minister has also since been the Chairman for the Business Licensing Authority, from 2013 to 2019, a member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal, from 2017 to 2019, and a member of the Nursing Board from 2018 to 2019.
In 2019, Vijay Daryanani became the first member of the Indian Community in Gibraltar to be elected as a Member of Parliament and as Minister for Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar. Today, Minister Daryanani has responsibility for Business, Tourism, Transport, Commercial Aviation and The Port. -
Nacho de Miguel
Head of Sustainability, Peninsula
Nacho is responsible for leading Peninsula’s future into sustainable energy. He has a special focus in creating and managing Peninsula’s LNG bunkering business with the aim to provide cleaner marine energy to its customers worldwide.
Nacho has more than 23 years of experience in the energy business. He started in the industry as Bunker Trader at the Spanish oil company CEPSA, moving then to the role of Fuels and Distillates Manager for Power Generation at Union Fenosa (now integrated into Naturgy).
In 2004, he joined Union Fenosa Gas where he held successive positions that included Head of Natural Gas and LNG contracts, Head of LNG Shipping, and Director for Business Development.
In 2020, he moved to Peninsula to be responsible for implementing the company’s sustainability strategy and its transition to cleaner fuels. -
Emmanouil Dimitrakakis
Project Manager, Hellenic Environmental Center SA
Emmanouil is a Chemical Engineer, M.Eng. from the National Technical University of Athens. He also holds an M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Crete. With more than 14 years of professional experience, he specializes in hazardous waste management, as well as environmental technologies and applications.
He is a published author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences since 2004, as well as book chapters, receiving more than 250 citations and a Scopus h-index of 5. He joined the R&D Department of Hellenic Environmental Center S.A. as project manager in 2019.
His main duties lie in the continuous research and evaluation of new technologies, in addition to novel procedures for the collection, transporation, treatment and final disposal of hazardous oily wastes. -
Nigel Draffin
Hon. Treasurer, IBIA & Independent Arbitrator and Consultant
Nigel has been in shipping for 55 years and around 30 years in bunkering. He joined Shell Tankers in 1966, serving on all classes of vessel, including VLCCs and LNG tankers, before coming ashore to specialise in fuel combustion and safety systems and, ultimately, bunker purchasing.
He was later a bunker broker with Gibsons and LQM. A founder member and past Chairman of IBIA, Nigel has written many of Petrospot’s books on bunkering and shipping and is Director of the Petrospot Academy, which runs the world-renowned Oxford Bunker Course.
Nigel is a member of IMarEST and Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Fuellers. -
John Ghio
CEO and Captain of the Port Acting, Gibraltar Port Authority
John started working in the bunker industry in 1998 when he joined Aegean Bunkering (Gibraltar) LTD when they first set up in Gibraltar in 1998.
Whilst at Aegean he actively participated in a number of expansion projects including increasing the number of bunker barges / floating storage assets, setting up a station in Morocco, obtaining bunkering and agency licences and coordination of supply operations in Gibraltar as well as supply operations in other ports.
John joined the Gibraltar Port Authority in 2011 as the Bunkering Superintendent. His role was to regulate the bunker industry. The main tool in achieving this was ensuring compliance at all times with the Bunkering Code of Practice, as well as ensuring that the code of practice reflected the best industry practices across the board through constant revisions and updates. In 2011 John was responsible for the launch and introduction of the STS Code of Practice in Gibraltar. John was promoted to the role of Senior Port Officer (Operations Manager) in 2015 and has since been promoted to the role of Marine Officer (Deputy Captain of the Port) – January 2017.
John has recently taken on the role of CEO and Captain of the Port Acting following the retirement of previous incumbent. -

Gavin Griffin

Gavin is the Vice President for Southern Europe, Black Sea and North & West Africa for Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) Ships Agency. He began his career in Gibraltar, his hometown, on one unforgettable day on 29 January 1999, working for what was known as Barwil, the predecessor brand of what is today WSS Ships Agency.
Gavin has worked in the sector for well over 20 years, first with Barwil but then at other reputable companies, such as ISS and Gibunco, before returning to WSS in 2019.
Throughout his career he has held several different senior roles, from Operations, Sales across to Project Management and M&As. He specialises in business development and has an eye for a good deal (when they come around), start-ups and transformations of struggling businesses. -

Alex Lavarello

Managing Partner of BWA Yachting GibraltarAlex is an experienced maritime operative in the Gibraltar maritime industry. As MD of Turners, one of the oldest port agencies in Gibraltar, he has modernised operating procedures to ensure that the company maintains the highest of standards. Turners acts as an agent for some of the largest fleet owners and operators globally, as well as the oil majors. Turners has created a niche as agents in the oil and gas and seismic sector, acting for many challenging shipyard operations, as well as the discharging of LNG at Gibraltar's new power station.
Alex was responsible for opening the BWA Yachting office in Gibraltar, the leading global yacht agency whose office network stretches throughout the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean and the Americas.
As Managing Partner of the Gibraltar branch of BWA, he has overseen year-on-year growth to make BWA the busiest super yacht agent in Gibraltar. -
Ian Laws
CEO, STS Marine Solutions
Ian has worked in the marine industry all his life. In the early 1990s, Ian had created a ship-to-ship (STS) company as owner and CEO and grew the business to the point of sale, thereafter remaining as CEO with the new owner, Teekay.
Today, Ian still remains in the STS business as CEO of STS Marine Solutions and is passionate about the safety and standards within the industry. He was a founding member and co-chair of the industry body EMEA.
Ian believes in developing and supporting youth and is extremely keen to share his knowledge with the younger generation. -
Aaron Lopez
Maritime Academy Manager (Ag), University of Gibraltar Maritime Academy
Aaron is an experienced Marine Engineer and Marine Surveyor. Having held various maritime-related management and leadership positions, he is well versed in the technical, operational and administrative aspects of the industry.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Marine Technology with honours in Marine Engineering, a Master’s of Science (MSc) in Naval Architecture, as well as an Officer of the Watch Engineering Certificate of Competency and STCW certificates.
Aaron’s qualifications and extensive local and international industry experience enable him to guide students on the training aspects of the University of Gibraltar’s maritime programmes, both in an operational and management capacity. -
Sebastian Perez
Commercial and Trading Manager, Scamp Worldwide
Sebastian is a professional Divemaster and DSV boat Captain with over 30 years of sales experience, half of which has been dedicated to SCAMP.
He joined SCAMP in 2004 as a Network Operator, quickly acclimatising and familiarising himself with the global underwater services sector. In 2007, Sebastian was promoted to Operations & Trading Manager, a position from which he ran the department and gained invaluable corporate experience.
Currently, Sebastian is the Commercial & Trading Manager of SCAMP where he uses his vast experience and understanding of the worldwide commercial underwater ship husbandry market to help develop and grow the business. -

René Smeets
LNG Network Development Manager Europe & Middle East, Shell
René is the Business Development Manager for Shell’s Downstream LNG bunkering network in Europe, Middle East and previously Asia-Pacific. In this capacity he has been leading Shell’s projects to invest in the first bunker vessels for Rotterdam and Singapore as well as driving cooperation projects with other parties in the Marine LNG space.
He has been with Shell for 15 years, half of which in the Trading & Supply business of conventional fuels and since 2014, in Shell’s Marine LNG business.
René is based in The Hague and holds a Master's degree in Econometrics & Operations Research. -
Britt Russell-Webster
Pricing Specialist, EMEA Marine Fuel, S&P Global Platts
Britt Russell-Webster is a marine fuel pricing specialist at S&P Global Platts in London, focussing on price transparency and market analysis for marine fuels in the ever-evolving shipping industry.
Prior to joining Platts, Britt worked for a marine and automotive lubricant additive supplier, where she specialised on European chemical regulations.
Britt has a Masters degree in Chemistry from Newcastle University in the UK. -
Tracy Wardell
Global Technical Manager, Intertek Lintec
Tracy began her working life as a Research Chemist with ICI on Teesside.
Having held a number of research and development positions, Tracy joined the Oilfield Chemicals Division of ICI, where she spent 13 years, working closely with customers, solving technical issues through the development of new products.
In 2011, Tracy joined Lintec Testing Services, now Intertek Lintec, as Operations & Key Account Manager, moving into a commercial role in 2014 to target growth in the European region as Business Development Manager. Since December 2019, just in time for IMO 2020, Tracy has held the position of Global Technical Manager for Intertek Lintec.
Tracy is a BSc Chemistry graduate.
