BRUSSELS, 12 November 2014 – CLIA Europe, the association representing Europe’s multibillion-euro cruise industry, has today announced that Raphael von Heereman will be its new Secretary General beginning February 2015.

Dr von Heereman is a seasoned airline and travel executive, bringing more than 25 years of international experience to the role, which he has gained from the airline industry, having worked for several airlines. He is due to take up his new position in Brussels as CLIA Europe Secretary General in February 2015, following the previously announced departure of current Secretary General Robert Ashdown.

Speaking about Mr Ashdown’s departure, CLIA’s President & CEO Christine Duffy said:
“I wish to express the industry’s deep gratitude to Rob Ashdown for having successfully transitioned the European cruise industry representation across Europe into a network of independent, but unified, associations working collectively under the leadership of CLIA Europe.”  “We will greatly miss Rob’s exemplary representation, dedication and commitment to the cruise industry, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. We are also grateful for his agreement to work alongside his successor in early 2015 so as to ensure a seamless transition,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises and CLIA Europe Chairman.

Talking about Dr von Heereman’s appointment, Christine Duffy said:
“I am delighted that Raphael von Heereman has agreed to become CLIA Europe’s next Secretary General. The CLIA Europe Executive Committee and Search Committee, chaired by David Dingle examined many candidates over the last months and we have no doubt that he has the right set of experience and skills to take the association to the next level. Having worked as industry representative before the European Commission and European Parliament, Mr. von Heereman is deeply familiar with Brussels and the EU policy arena. Also, resulting from the different jobs that he has held within the travel industry, including various positions with airline associations, Dr von Heereman is therefore well versed in the trade associations business. We are confident that these two skill-sets coupled with his experience, strong commercial skills and technical know-how will allow him to quickly transition into CLIA Europe and its activities.”

Prior to joining CLIA Europe, Dr von Heereman worked for Lufthansa, TUIfly and Qatar Airways, where he held the position of Vice President Aero political and Regulatory Affairs.
