LLEWELLYN BANKES-HUGHES

Managing Director

Llewellyn began his career in the oil industry in 1980 as an oil price reporter (Petroleum Argus), working in London and New York. In 1983, he launched the Petrospot Directory, the first international oil trading contacts directory of its kind. From 1983 to 1985 he was a physical oil broker (Eperon Petroleum and Albion Oil) in New York and London. In 1985, he became markets editor of Petroleum Intelligence Weekly, leaving in 1988 to launch the real-time oil information services OPEC Listener and Oil Market Listener.

Llewellyn joined the Oxford-based MRC Business Information Group in 1992. He founded and launched BunkerNews, which became the world’s leading information provider to the marine fuels industry, and later the BunkerNews Daily and the BunkerNews Directory of International Bunker Suppliers, Traders & Brokers.

In May 1999, Llewellyn was appointed Publisher, Informa Energy Publishing, expanding his portfolio to include Lloyd’s List Energy Day. In June 2000, he was appointed Director of Publishing, MRC Business Information Group, part of the Informa Group. In September 2002, he was appointed Managing Director of MRC Business Information Group Ltd.

In 10 years at the helm of BunkerNews, Llewellyn raised the profile of the international bunker industry and campaigned for a greater level of education, training and co-operation among industry members. He organised the twice-yearly Oxford Bunker Course and played an active role in bunker conferences world-wide, organising some of the world's largest and most successful events.

In May 2003, Llewellyn left Informa to establish Petrospot Limited, a dynamic independent publishing and events company focused on information resources for the transportation, energy and maritime industries.

Born in Wales in 1957, he lives near Oxford with his wife and two children. He has a degree in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of London.
