| THE PETROSPOT MARITIME SECURITY DEBATE:
Taking arms against a troubled sea

Combating piracy is an issue which is being tackled at governmental, diplomatic and military levels - with varying degrees of success. However, each reported incident involves a ship's crew taking steps to defend itself against attack - often without recourse to assistance provided by national or multi-national task forces.
In the Petrospot Maritime Security Debate, we will consider to what extent vessel operators should use an on-board armed response to repel attacks. This is a contentious subject and has engendered strongly-held and often opposing points of view throughout the shipping industry.
The Debate will be chaired by Ian Taylor, Editor of Cargo Security International, and will feature key industry players speaking in support of or against the proposition that ships' crews or on-board security teams should be able to take up arms against their attackers.
Without doubt, the debate format will produce a lively and combative exchange of views, and interventions from the floor will be strongly encouraged. The arming of vessels has been much discussed by the media and in other forums; the Petrospot Maritime Security Debate aims to give you the opportunity to discuss the problem face-to-face with other shipping industry professionals for whom it is, quite literally, a 'life or death' situation.
