Preparing For The Revolution: The Case for Bunker Metering
A revolution is underway that could change the bunker industry forever.
Some of the world's biggest shipping companies and largest bunker suppliers are working on plans to develop and install onboard mass flow meters that will accurately measure bunker deliveries and - they hope - eliminate once and for all the invidious practice of short deliveries.
There is still some way to go before entire fleets of receiving vessels or of bunker barges are fitted with flow meters but there is serious intent behind this movement, and its impact on the industry, in Singapore and elsewhere, this revolution could have a huge impact on the bunker industry.
All the main players involved in inline metering and online monitoring - led by A.P. Moller/Maersk and including owners, suppliers, barge operators, the maritime authorities and meter manufacturers - will come together to debate the pros and cons of bunker metering.
